The Body in Poetry

Hosted by Caroline Brink

The Vision:

We are a society of thinkers. We spend so much time inside our own heads: processing our days, worrying about the future, and even thinking about the things we’re feeling. But emotions should be felt in our bodies. In order to properly understand and move through our emotions, we must process the sensations they evoke, experience the feeling not just in our mind but in our bodies.

As artists and writers, we often get blocked by our own minds. We end up censoring ourselves and overthinking the concepts we are working through. In this workshop, we will address both of these problems by combining practices of movement and art, and silencing the editorial voice.

This workshop will help participants achieve two things. First, we will teach participants how to use art as a tool to better process and experience their emotions. Second, participants will learn how to use their body to inform their writing practice and guide them beyond artistic blocks by transcending their thinking mind.

What the event will include: (overview)

  • Writing will flow from completely stream of consciousness towards a more polished piece

  • Will explore how writing can not only be used as a means of expression but also as a therapeutic method to process feelings

  • Alternating between movement and timed writing exercises, we will explore how we can use our bodies to inform our art

Monogram Chain Stitching

Monogram Chain Stitching: Hand Towels with Haley Houseman

In this 2.5-hour workshop, learn the art of chain stitching and create a personalized hand towel or handkerchief featuring your monogram. This relaxing, decorative hand-sewing technique is perfect for gifts, heirlooms, or adding charm to your everyday textiles. We’ll learn how to design a monogram, transfer it to fabric for embroidery, and work to finish the monogram together. Students will take home a needle and choice of thread. This workshop is kid friendly, starting at age 10, and is a great way to learn the basics of this fun embroidery stitch. All materials provided.

Attendees will leave with a resource guide to several basic hand sewing and embroidery stitches as well as places to purchase fabric, notions, and supplies in the future. A book list of resources to explore will also be included.

This class is capped at 8 students and requires a minimum registration of four students to run.
