November 7 / The Body In Poetry
Friday, November 7 from 6:30pm–9pm
The Vision:
We are a society of thinkers. We spend so much time inside our own heads: processing our days, worrying about the future, and even thinking about the things we’re feeling. But emotions should be felt in our bodies. In order to properly understand and move through our emotions, we must process the sensations they evoke, experience the feeling not just in our mind but in our bodies.
As artists and writers, we often get blocked by our own minds. We end up censoring ourselves and overthinking the concepts we are working through. In this workshop, we will address both of these problems by combining practices of movement and art, and silencing the editorial voice.
This workshop will help participants achieve two things. First, we will teach participants how to use art as a tool to better process and experience their emotions. Second, participants will learn how to use their body to inform their writing practice and guide them beyond artistic blocks by transcending their thinking mind.
What the event will include: (overview)
Writing will flow from completely stream of consciousness towards a more polished piece
Will explore how writing can not only be used as a means of expression but also as a therapeutic method to process feelings
Alternating between movement and timed writing exercises, we will explore how we can use our bodies to inform our art
Instructor:
Caroline Brink (she/her): is a visual artist, a writer, and a community organizer. Her work tells stories of interconnection. She is particularly interested in exploring the intersection of queerness, feminism, and the environment. She received her bachelor’s degree in creative writing at Trinity College of Hartford. Her work has been published in Trinity’s literary magazine, The Vernacular, The Drum Literary Magazine, The Quinobequin Review and Fruitslice. Caroline currently works as the Director of Operations at Beacon Hill Books. She is devoted to continuing to use her writing as a means of resistance and change. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
